Description

Executed in Pilot ballpoint pen on paper, Colosse 19 (65 × 50 cm / 25.6 × 19.7 in) depicts a monumental human figure suspended in an undefined space, seemingly freed from the forces of gravity. Rendered through meticulous layers of ballpoint pen, the body emerges with striking physical presence, its rounded forms and subtle tonal transitions conveying both mass and movement. Isolated against a vast expanse of white paper, the figure appears to float, creating a powerful contrast between weight and lightness.

The composition captures a moment of transformation. With limbs extended and folded simultaneously, the body occupies an ambiguous position that resists any stable orientation. The gesture suggests falling, ascending, or drifting, allowing the viewer to experience the figure as existing beyond ordinary spatial constraints. This sense of suspension lends the work a contemplative quality, transforming the body into a metaphor for uncertainty, change, and human resilience.

As part of the Colosse series, the drawing continues Prudence’s exploration of monumentality through the human form. Rather than presenting the colossus as a symbol of domination or heroic power, the artist emphasizes vulnerability, introspection, and the complexity of embodied experience. The figure’s imposing scale is balanced by a palpable sense of fragility, inviting empathy rather than awe.

The use of the Pilot ballpoint pen is central to the work’s visual richness. Through countless overlapping marks, Prudence builds volume and depth with extraordinary precision, creating a surface that recalls both sculpture and engraving. The density of the line work reveals the passage of time embedded within the drawing process, making the accumulation of marks an integral part of the artwork’s meaning.

In Colosse 19, the body becomes a site of reflection where strength and vulnerability coexist. Suspended between motion and stillness, the figure embodies the tensions of the human condition, inviting viewers to contemplate themes of transformation, endurance, and the search for balance within an ever-changing world.
