Description

A butterfly chasing (2018) (14,5×5,3in), by the artist Christine Galvez, is a striking metal sculpture encased within a glass dome. The piece features a cluster of black metal butterflies, each delicately perched on slender metal rods, arranged to appear as if they are fluttering upwards. The butterflies vary slightly in size, adding a sense of movement and realism to the otherwise static display.

The glass dome serves both as protection and as an aesthetic enhancement, giving the impression of preserving something fragile and precious, like a collection of rare specimens. The black circular base contrasts with the transparent dome and adds a sense of weight and grounding to the piece. The butterflies’ dark metallic sheen contrasts against the simplicity of the glass, emphasizing their intricate shapes and textures.

This sculpture has a minimalist yet deeply evocative quality, merging themes of nature and industrial materiality. It invokes a sense of preservation and contemplation, as the butterflies—normally symbols of freedom and transience—are captured and held in place, creating a juxtaposition of movement and stillness. The use of metal gives the butterflies an unexpected permanence, subverting their usual association with fragility.
