A passion rooted in her beginnings:

“I got started with a spark while watching my father tinkering, welding and creating in his workshop in the south of France. The spark inspired me as a young girl to try my hand at metalwork. After a career in investment banking in France, I moved to NY and joined the Art Students League in 2012 to start a brand-new journey. I became a Makerspace member in August 2020, and I don’t regret it! I am enjoying every single day in the amazing space, full equipped shop which allows me to continue to improve my skills among welcoming and nice talented artists and makers.”

From her youth in a charming seaside town in the South of France, Christine Galvez found inspiration in her father’s craftsmanship, igniting her passion for transforming cold metal into works of magic. Later, the vibrant city life of New York infused her artistry with new themes: sunlight and natural forms intertwined with inventive creatures and bold urban structures. These creations became both the companions and expressions of her artistic journey, bridging the serenity of nature with the energy of the metropolis.

Through the intense heat and transformative fire of her craft, Christine Galvez brings to life the “Curiosity Cabinet” collection. Each piece in this captivating series showcases a unique species, encapsulating distinct emotional elements. Among them, “Under Pressure”, her most personal creation to date, vividly portrays the delicate and complex balance between beauty, danger, perseverance, and oppression, a true reflection to her artistic depth and vision.

Awarded the prestigious Red Dot Award at the 2019 Art Students League of NY Student Concours, this piece placed Christine Galvez in the esteemed company of Georgia O’Keeffe, another Red Dot recipient. This recognition became a turning point, inspiring Christine to push the boundaries of her artistry and explore new creative frontiers.

By 2020, Christine Galvez relocated her atelier to Brooklyn, setting up her studio in Makerspace NYC. This move not only expanded her workspace and access to tools but also broadened her creative vision. In this dynamic new environment, Christine began incorporating upcycled materials into her work, transforming reclaimed automobile parts, scrap metal, and standard steel into her signature metallic creations. Her artistic journey continues to evolve, breathing new life into luminaries and crafting furniture that seamlessly blends form and function.

In 2021, Christine’s artistry was recognized with the prestigious City Artist Corps Grant from the NY Foundation for the Arts and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. This public acknowledgment has further fueled her passion for creating functional yet artistic pieces. Among her most notable works is a collection of iconic water tanks, which serve as ornamental homages to the city she proudly calls home. These versatile tanks function as lighting or decorative elements, often doubling as hidden compartments for cherished mementos.

Expanding beyond table lamps, Christine’s larger sculptural works have grown into expansive, sometimes wall-sized installations. These creations masterfully bridge the gap between urban aesthetics and natural inspirations, solidifying her reputation as a transformative artist.

Her work and inspiration:

Christine Galvez’s work spans three primary areas: sculpture, luminary design, and furniture. At the heart of her creations, metal and glass take center stage as the main characters. Each piece tells a layered, intricate story, where the act of creating light served as her first and most enduring source of artistic inspiration. Through these materials, Christine transforms her vision into works that are as functional as they are deeply expressive. The myths that evolved her artworks created a personal universe, capturing a preserving nature’s fleeting beauty with metal.

A light fixture is more than just a source of illumination, it is an integral element of design. Guided by this principle, her artworks transcend functionality to become sculptural masterpieces. Each piece interacts dynamically with its environment, casting enchanting shadow plays that dance across walls, ceilings, and entire rooms, transforming spaces into immersive realms of light and artistry.
