Description
In Regards (2022), Nicole Monnereau explores the interplay between abstraction and figuration through a refined composition executed in mixed technique on paper. The small square format of 19 x 19 cm becomes a space of dynamic visual dialogue, where forms and lines seem to gaze at one another — echoing the title, Regards (“Looks” or “Glances”).
The piece features layered cut-out shapes in subtle tones of beige, white, and gray, outlined with bold, gestural black lines. These organic silhouettes suggest faces or figures in conversation, while the background, marked by simplified motifs, enhances the sense of rhythm and connection. The contrast between fluid contours and structured design evokes movement and emotion, creating a poetic visual balance.
Monnereau’s work captures a quiet yet expressive energy — an abstract reflection on perception, dialogue, and the act of seeing itself.
