Growing Up with Vision: Elizabeth Lennard’s Youth and Creative Environment:
In her mid-20s, Elizabeth Lennard attended the San Francisco Art Institute in California. Drawn to the purist school of black-and-white photography and Ansel Adams’ zone system, she studied under renowned photographers who helped guide her toward developing her own unique style.
One of her instructors, British photographer Tony Ray-Jones, assigned her a photo reportage project. She chose to document the Hare Krishna movement, which had only recently arrived in San Francisco. In the neighborhood where they lived stood a towering Indian statue of Krishna, which she photographed in striking black and white.
Almost as if guided by fate, she later decided to paint those photographs. Attempting to recreate the vibrant colors of the painted statue, she unknowingly began to shape the distinct aesthetic that would come to define her body of work.
Spaces That Speak: How Architecture and Environment Inspired Elizabeth Lennard:
“At one time, German collectors who had never visited New York saw my work and, when they finally came to New York for the first time, they remarked that my painted potos captured the essence of how they had imagined the city. Initially, I wasn’t aiming for complete surrealism; rather, I sought to create an alternative reality, or as if it were highly cinematic scene, where everything is viewed through a blue-tinted lens, for example.”

As a young woman, Elizabeth Lennard dreamed of becoming an architect. But she soon realized the profession involved a great deal of mathematics and rigid technical constraints. Still, her fascination with buildings and architecture never faded.
This enduring interest is evident in one of her series inspired by the architecture and cityscapes of New York. In these works, she infused her imagery with vivid, bright colors, bringing structural forms to life with her own artistic language.
A Career Without Limits: Elizabeth Lennard’s Multimedia Journey:
Elizabeth Lennard is a multimedia artist whose portfolio spans from writing to documentaries. Her expansive and long-standing career reflects a deep engagement with diverse forms of creative expression.
She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the notable The Unbearable Lightness: 1980s Photography and Film (2016).
Lennard’s enduring fascination with architecture and the built environment led her to direct Tokyo Melody: A Film About Ryuichi Sakamoto (1985) and to publish a photographic book on Alexander Chemetoff’s Bamboo Garden in Paris (1997). She also created the video-performance Take a Cord in collaboration with writer Danielle Mémoire, which was presented at the Centre Pompidou.
The Pompidou holds particular significance for Lennard. In 1979, she held a solo exhibition there and has since been included in several group shows, including her collaborative work with Mémoire. Her video works and performances have also been showcased at prestigious venues such as MoMA, the Louvre Museum, the Grand Palais, and the Château de Versailles.
Lennard is an artist who continually evolves with the times. As tools like Photoshop and other digital technologies emerged, she embraced them, constantly experimenting and expanding the visual language of her art.
